Air France (AF) flight 447 with more than 200 people on board went missing at about 0600 GMT June 1 after dropping off radar over the Atlantic off the Brazilian coast. Air traffic control lost contact with the Airbus A330 after it departed from Rio de Janeiro-Galeo International Airport (GIG) bound for Charles de Gaulle International Airport (CDG) in Paris, where it was scheduled to land at 0910 GMT.
The Airbus A330-200 sent an automatic message signaling equipment failure as it hit turbulence early in its 11-hour flight, according to Air France.
The last known contact with the plane was at 1:33 a.m. GMT (8:33 p.m. Sunday night ET), according to the Brazilian Air Force.
The Brazilian Air Force has begun conducting search and rescue operations.
