Meteorologists forecast that portions of western Virginia, western Maryland and eastern West Virginia could see up to 46 cm (18 inches) of snow. Between 15-30 cm (6-12 inches) are likely in the central storm path, which stretches from central Indiana, east to southern New Jersey and south to central Virginia. Most other areas will see approximately 8-15 cm (3-6 inches) of snow, except for portions of eastern Tennessee, central North Carolina and southeastern Virginia, which will experience an icy mix.
The storm will cause hazardous travel conditions. Significant disruptions are likely at local airports, including Kansas City (MCI), St. Louis (STL), Chicago O'Hare (ORD), Chicago Midway (MDW), Washington Dulles (IAD), Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA), Baltimore (BWI), Philadelphia International (PHL), Newark International (EWR), John F. Kennedy (JFK) and La Guardia (LGA). Smaller airports will also be severely affected.
Ground transportation will also face major disruptions during the storm. Major interstates may be closed. It may be several days before all roads in the region are cleared of snow. Rail and mass transit cancellations or delays are also probable.
Business operations will be affected throughout the region. Power outages are likely in hard-hit areas. Depending on the extent of the outages, it may take up to a week for power to be fully restored in hard-hit areas.
Monitor local media for the latest weather updates. Avoid nonessential travel during the storm. Verify condition of roadways prior to travel. Confirm all travel and business plans. Allow additional time to travel. Heed the advice of authorities.
